Interview: Sweet Pea Tulip….An amazing find in New Orleans

Folks….I’ve been wanting to post this interview for the past couple months and I couldn’t wait to share the find I located in New Orleans when I was there!  It was something of a little shop on the corner and one you might miss otherwise if you weren’t keeping your eyes open.  The store has amazing street appeal…it’s just many stores are squeezed next to each other, but when I saw the open door I simply ran in.  I wasn’t sure what I’d find, but from the street it looked like there would be tons of interesting items to buy….the fashion vibe: trendy, hip, and retro.  It was almost too cool.
The store was boutique chic and had really cool home decor.  There was tons of awesome retro photographs and cool Marilyn Monroe-inspired art.  It was too good to pass up another encounter with the Marilyn Monroe vibe that has continued to catch my attention.
SweetPeaPics-1 Please see my initial post on the amazing Marilyn and you’ll find I’ve had a couple other posts where I mention I’ve caught sight of her in a shop or window.  The name of the store:  Sweet Pea Tulip.
I took time to go through the store and I chatted with one of the sales representatives to learn more about the art and if they’d be interested in being featured on my blog.  Luckily they agreed and I’ve been able to come back with the following answers about this little shop.  Additionally I picked up a lovely little original pic of Marilyn Monroe blowing a bubble gum bubble.  Check out the third picture on the wall in the pic and then see the same spot after I grabbed it and ran to the counter.  It’s currently getting much love in my home.

Before: Loving this pic in the third spot at the end! Bought it!

After: The same spot but now empty! This little picture is going home with me....the artist is the owner of the shop! I love her artwork...

The Questions:
1) When did you open your store? How many locations do you have?  Do you have an online store?
I opened my first store in the French Quarter in 2001. We currently only have one location and getting our website up and running soon.

2) How would you describe your store?  I found it to be very inviting…very much filled with interesting items.  I loved the combination of clothing and art.  Your store definitely had a point of view.  What was your inspiration for your store decoration?

Always in style and always affordable!!!

3) What’s your top-selling item?  Do you wish you could carry anything else?  You had an eclectic selection of items.  Any new adds on your lists or do you feel you have the right mix already in merchandise?

Dresses have always been our hot selling item as the summer time it is so hot here and the winters are mild and we can layer with our dresses. We are always on the look out for fun and exiting new merchandise.

4) I loved the Marilyn Monroe art.  You’ve got to tell me about the artist?  How did you find her?  How did you decide to bring her element into your store?

I have always decorated the store with Marilyn Monroe and everyone loves it. I started doing the art work myself and people have responded well to it and it’s has became my happy place.

5) I’ve noticed many Marilyn Monroe memorabilia in various stores.  She’s popular now with a line of clothing carried in stores like Macy’s and available online.  What are your thoughts on this trend?  I thought items like the candles you carried were a refreshing trend.  Do you plan to carry any other items that are somewhat unusual in this way?

We are always looking for merchandise that department stores and chains do not carry and always looking for local artist and local designers.

6) Where do you see your store going in the future?  If you could do anything to take your store into a new direction what would that be?

7) Can you describe your customer?  Your store seems to be inspired by a particular theme…..what keywords would you use to describe your store?

Our customers range from tweens all the way up. We love how the quarter allows for us to have such a diverse group of Customers.

8) What would you like people to know about your store that’s not already known?

That we love what we do every day.

Candles? OMG....I almost passed out they were just TOO cool. I missed out and didn't pick one up. Ugh! Say no to regrets...and buy when you find something too unique to leave on the shelf.
